Jesus was a builder.

It’s no wonder that the metaphors He used when speaking to His people were about building and materials.

Luke 6:49 says:

But the one who listens and does not act is like a person who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, it collapsed at once and was completely destroyed.

Matthew 16:18 says:

And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.

The foundation, the rock, gives support so that the structure will not fail. In the present day, builders use concrete for foundations because of its strength. However, even concrete can crumble if exposed to certain conditions. Builders add rebar to reinforce the concrete to withstand all types of pressure.

God is like our rebar. He strengthens us to withstand the pressures of life.

Living without God is like pouring concrete without reinforcing it. We can live through some of life’s pressures but if it gets to be too much, we crumble. This can play out in the form of things like chronic health issues, addictions or emotional distress.

With God, we can withstand anything. He is the support we need to stand steadfast through our trials. Reading His Word activates our faith and gives us the strength to remain despite life’s ups and downs.

Do not fear: I am with you; do not be anxious: I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand. ~Isaiah 41:10
