I hunger for food as I am only human
make me hunger for you instead.
The bread of life isn’t made from wheat
it is your Word, our truth, our nourishment.
It’s called a fast, but it is anything but
it seems to draw minutes into hours, hours into days.
Let me see this extra time as an opportunity
to seek the spiritual bread I really crave.
To receive your love, your mercy, your grace
we must lay down the lives we’ve made.
It isn’t about giving up but giving in
to the will, your will, that saves.
“Pick up your cross and follow me”
is what Jesus said to the fisherman.
He speaks those words to you and to me
to bring us closer to Him.
We resist His call to live to serve
to live lives of familiarity and comfort,
grasp onto our vices that lead us to sin
ignore the Spirit, close the door.
God doesn’t ask us to fast to make us miserable
by giving up all the things we want.
He orders us to obedience to His will
because that’s the only way to His Son.
The Word is the way to receive the bread
the bread of life He offers to us.
In His Word we find the peace
that makes giving up the world worth the price.
We realize when the Spirit fills us
that we are now truly fulfilled.
Our lives before had been unbelievably empty
before we were willing to do His will.
