I grew up never reading the Bible. It seemed to me to be just an overly-thick, dusty book that contained a lot of words like “thy” and “thine.” Having been written thousands of years ago, what could it possibly have to do with my life? This is how God found me through His Word.
In 2020, life as we knew it changed forever. And I’m not talking about the pandemic. There was a palpable shift in society as a whole. The absolutes of right and wrong seemed fuzzy somehow. “Truth” was something that changed depending on who you asked, on what day of the week and what side of the aisle they sat. It wasn’t defined by anything besides how the “expert” felt about it.
truth in his word
“What is truth?” was the question that plagued my mind. Although I was not a Bible reader, I did go to church. Scripture floated around in my head untethered to meaning or purpose. Familiar words I’d heard but never really listened to. “I am the way, the truth, the life.” I felt really clueless when I realized the truth I was looking for was right in front of me the whole time.
Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. His Words and the Words of His Father are the only truth we have in this upside-down world. If we let the world define our truth, we are led away from God and away from His plan for our lives.
god found me through a podcast
I realized that I knew where the truth was found but I hadn’t learned the truth because I had never taken time to read it. That’s when I stumbled upon The Bible In A Year Podcast with Father Mike Schmitz from Ascension Press. It does exactly what it promises, takes you through the Bible in just a year with daily readings, prayer and reflection. It changed my life. It’s one of my favorite things! Because I didn’t know what the Bible said, I wasn’t following its direction. Once I knew the truth that was revealed in the pages of God’s Word I was able to live in a way that was obedient to His will.
When I listened to the Bible verse about the Parable of the Talents, I was convicted. I had not used the gifts I have for His glory. In fact, I was like the last servant who buried them.
his word helped write my words
I started writing. When I wrote the Holy Spirit would guide my words. Soon I recognized when I had tried to write before I was trying to do it on my own, that’s why I struggled. I would stare at the page and the words wouldn’t come. When I invited God into my writing space, it was He who wrote the words. It was just my fingers doing the typing.
Now when I write, He is with me. The words you see are what God wants you to know through me. I am the conduit for His wisdom, His grace, His glory.
God Showed Up
I started an Instagram page to share what I wrote. Through the urging of His Spirit I started sharing Bible Verses. I wanted to share the transformative power of His Word with as many people as possible. In a moment of doubt, I wondered if I was doing the right thing. It was at that moment that God showed up in an unexpected way. He grew my Instagram page from 1,000 followers to over 10,000 in just days. God showed me how important it is to share His Word and I will continue as long as He guides me to do so.
God found me through His Word and I never want to be lost again.
Absolutely beautiful insight! So much of what you have shared are my experiences as well. Our spiritual lives changed when you shared your experience with Father Mike’s podcast. There has been an understanding and clarity of God’s instruction and the daily nourishment for my soul.
Isn’t it amazing what God’s Word can do!?! I feel like I lived life with scales on my eyes for years and when I was reintroduced to Jesus through God’s Word those scales fell off and now I see! I’m so glad you’re on this journey too. It’s been such a pleasure to share it with you!
